Rick has lived in Richmond since 1973, and has practised law in Richmond from 1975. As part of the firm's mandate to participate in community matters, he has been involved in the founding and operation of groups such as the Richmond Sports Council, the Richmond Community Foundation and the Richmond Men's Basketball League. He has served as a presenter for Richmond for its bids for the Commonwealth Games and the Canada Games and as the Vice-chair of the Richmond Facility Task Force as well as the Chairman of the Referendum Committee, which was successful in 1993 in the referendum approving a new pool and hockey arena in Richmond.

Rick has also served on the Community Policing Advisory Committee and the Richmond Athletic Commission, and has been a chairman of committees for the Special Olympics, provincially and nationally, and the Games for the Disabled, provincially and nationally, and has also coached teams in soccer and ringette. He is also a member of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, Northwest Chapter and the Canada — America Society.
